Say it with me “You down with O.P.P? Yeah you know me!” Tell the truth, your head nodded a lil while you said it. Join me, if you would, for a trip down memory lane—just don’t get stuck there.
O.P.P. is a classic hip hop song many of us 70’s and 80’s babies may even still listen to today. Although the song was probably very inappropriate for me to blast from my boombox as a child, it has some relevance for my life today – perhaps not the way you think.
“O is for other, P is for people scratchin’ temple, the last P”, well that can be simple. As we grow up, we often discover that the last P usually stands for…PRIORITY. You got it — Other People’s Priorities!
I’m beginning now to break the habit of putting other people’s priorities before my own and I encourage you to do the same. No, I’m not saying to stop helping, uplifting, or caring for others. What I am saying is to not get caught up in the whirlwind of someone’s else’s timeline of “urgency” and take on all the emotions that are tied with it, such as panic, stress, and fear. Better yet, I’m suggesting that you set boundaries for yourself and your family, and stick to those boundaries.
We live in a world where everything is instant and people want things to happen in the snap of a finger. In many cases, people fail to plan and their “last minute” becomes your last minute. We have all been guilty of this from time to time. However, once you begin to set boundaries in your life, put yourself on a schedule, set goals for yourself, and PRIORITIZE your own life, then “last minute” drama becomes a thing of the past.
And it should stay there.
But this freedom doesn’t come easy, especially if your life has always revolved around O.P.P. That’s why you must practice prioritizing your life and not jump to rescue others from their priorities. It’s not fair to you. There are many tools out there to assist you with this, including my husband’s Personal Success Planner: JP3 Master Edition. Check the link for more info about this amazing tool! (Yes, I am plugging my husband’s book, not only because he’s my husband but because it truly is a life-changer.)
Now, sing it loud! You down with O.P.P.? No, no, not me!
